Definition - Alarm System
A home alarm system in the traditional sense was an electrical system with a siren that emitted a loud noise to scare away intruders. The loud noise would of course draw the attention of others making the perpetrator less likely to stick around thus saving your house. With alarm monitoring from a central monitoring center a signal from your alarm gets sent to a team of operators who will then alert the proper authorities.
Why you would want a Home Alarm System?
Other than being a deterrent to potential burglars a security system can also alert that something is happening inside your house such as a fire. When using smoke and heat detection in conjunction with a home security system emergency services can be contacted as soon as the smoke detector emits the first beep. This could save time and a lot more.
Another benefit of a home security system is usually a discount can be applied to homeowners insurance.
Monitoring Options
Perimeter Devices (Door and Window Sensor)
When a contact is installed in your home, a magnet is placed on the window frame or door frame and a metal strip on the window sill or wall area. When these two components are in contact with each other a complete circuit is formed, and the activated security system recognizes that there is no break in its layout. However, if a window or door is opened while the security system is turned on, the circuit is broken and the window or door contacts send a signal to the security system, which then sounds an alarm. The benefits of utilizing door and window contacts efficiently are numerous! When used correctly, they can be a valuable addition to motion detectors and cameras because they are rarely seen by intruders. They can even be used in cases where parents want to keep an eye on their kids, either trying to leave or enter the home unnoticed.
Motion Detectors
Motion detectors can be used in many different ways to help make your home more secure. For the most part, motion detectors work to cover various "zones" throughout your house and will trigger the alarm when it detects movement. But with some more advanced home alarm and surveillance systems, a motion detector can also control such things as hall, stairway, and outside lights, plus cameras.
Some motion detectors are very simple and inexpensive, while others are more complex and somewhat more costly. Among some types of motion detectors are infrared, pet immune, dual technology, ceiling mount, and outdoor.
Glass Break Detectors
Even if the doors and windows of your house are protected by contact sensors, your home is still vulnerable to someone breaking in through a glass area. Although the shattering glass will make a loud noise, it will not trigger your door or window sensor to sound the alarm. That's why glass break and shock detectors are so important. Using such devices will help make your home security system more complete.
Glass break detectors come in a couple of designs and in a couple of categories. For the most part glass break detectors are acoustic and work by detecting the sound that breaking glass makes. While shock detectors work off vibration (similar to the method used for car alarms).
Glass break detectors are available in both hardwired and wireless versions. The detector mounts on the wall or
on the ceiling and listens in to an area which should be at the very minimum 20 feet away in all directions. This means just one glass break detector can be mounted in a typical sized room with multiple glass windows and it should be able to protect all of the vulnerable spots.
Keyless Entry Devices (Key Fob)
The wireless keychain remote allows you to arm and disarm your security system. It can also perform other functions such as turn lights on and off or even set off the alarm to alert the proper authorities. The wireless keyfob is small, portable and can fit in your pocket and has a range of 100 ft.
