If you ask anyone about the "Golden Age of Movies", they would probably think of the 1930's through the early 1960's. Historians would agree.

Historians would also point out that that period included some of the most miserable years in human history.

The Great Depression with 25% unemployment and no government safety net during a time few of us can imagine. This was a time of daily desperation for over 11 years, when families were torn apart as they sought shelter, and any type of work. This was a time when many did not know what they were going to eat or where they were going to sleep.

Then World War Two with over 60 Million global casualties including over 400,000 Americans with over 16 million Americans in uniform generating constant concern for the families they left behind.

Then Americans shifted into the "Cold War", a time when children hid under their desks and families built bomb shelters as "Mutually Assured Destruction" entered our vocabulary.

And yet, these years are also remembered as the "Golden Age of Movies".

It wasn't because of the movies, while some were works of art, most were mass produced, and the production values and technology were primitive.

It was because of the theaters, the only venue for movies at that time.

Every once in a while, for a little while, our stressed ancestors could sit in a room and be someone else as they traveled somewhere else.

They could be Flash Gordon, or Dorothy, or Scarlett, or Ben Hur. They could go back in time, to outer space, to the old west, or even OZ.

And during those few hours, they could restore themselves, they could heal their hearts, and they could return to a world we will never understand. It was like a drug, but without the side effects.

They could do that because they could lose themselves and suspend their disbeliefs. They could do that because they were immersed in an environment that allowed them to.

What would have happened if a door had opened and washed out the image, or the phone rang, or the kids ran through chasing their pet? They would have been ripped away from those restorative moments and shoved back into the world.
